Walking in Castellar

Castellar del Vallès is a town located in a rich natural and heritage environment.

It is part of the Natural Park of Sant Llorenç del Munt I l’Obac and is crossed by the river Ripoll.

It is also worth highlighting heritage elements of great interest such as the imposing neo-Gothic church of Sant Esteve (also known as the Cathedral of Valleys) and buildings of medieval origin such as the churches of Sant Feliu del Racó, Sant Esteve de Castellar Vell, Les Arenes and Sant Pere d’Ullastre or the magnificent Castle of Clasquerí.

MORNING

We suggest you put on your boots and start the day with a walk that will take you to one of the most emblematic elements of Castellar: the Puig de la Creu, a 668 meter peak, which is included in the list of 100 summits of the FEEC (Federation of Excursionist Entities of Catalonia).

This mountain is, moreover, the scenario of many legends. According to the story, this peak was the place where the dragon of Sant Llorenç died, he had been wounded during a fight with the Count of Barcelona.

It is a simple and circular route of about 9 km, which starts and ends in the main square of the city: you will find detailed information on the route on this link.

At the top of Puig de la Creu, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the Valais plain and you will discover the recently restored Romanesque church of Santa Maria. If you have already done this route, don’t worry! On Castellar’s Town Hall website you will find more!

WHERE TO HAVE LUNCH?

Once back, if you are hungry and want to eat, the town has a wide choice of restaurants that stand out for their diversity.

Oh! Do not miss the opportunity to taste the dishes cooked with the “del ganxet” beans, one of the most characteristic products of the city. If you prefer, you can go to Can Casamada, one of the most emblematic farmhouses in the municipality. At the Can Casamada farm, they grow green beans and, if it’s the season, you can buy them in their store.

You can check the location of Can Casamada and the opening hours of their agro-shop here.

We also suggest you to taste some very appreciated sweets in Castellar:

The Villarín, specialty of the Villaró Bakery that they prepare with cream, mocha, strawberry and chocolate according to a very old family recipe.

The Montserratina, an ice cream confectionery from Pastry Muntada inspired by the mountain of Montserrat. They are composed of three different flavors of ice cream, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, covered with dark chocolate and crunchy almonds.

Do you like the idea of picnicking and enjoying an outdoor meal? We suggest:

Parc de Colobrers

In this huge green space you can walk or bike, you will also find an area with swings and a picnic area.

Recreation area of Castellar Vell

This is a municipal area located next to the old parish church of Castellar del Vallès. It is equipped with a barbecue area for free use but without tables or chairs.

Recreation area of Les Arenes

The recreation area of les Arenes is part of the Natural Park of Sant Llorenç del Munt i l ‘Obac.

This is a picnic area with bar service, table and grill rental and toilets. Next to this area there is a source of drinking water.

AFTERNOON

We suggest you make a route through the old town of Castellar, you can know more about it on this link.

The route starts at Plaça Major and takes us to emblematic points of the municipality such as Cal Targa is obligatory (where the president of the Generalitat Lluís Companys spent his summers for a few years), the romantic gardens of Palau Tolrà (a luxurious complex built by the Tolrà family, famous textile entrepreneurs of Castellar, which currently houses the seat of the town hall) or the church of Sant Esteve (a magnificent neo-gothic building that for its great dimensions is popularly known as the cathedral of the Vallès).

You can take the opportunity to take a look at the local shops, where you will find shops of all kinds!

If you are traveling with children and it is hot, we suggest you visit the water games that you will find on Plaça de Catalunya, where the children can cool off and where you can rest for a while after the walk.

Consult the water games schedules on this link.
