Chapel of the Mare de Déu de les Arenes

arenes

The church of the Mare de Déu de les Arenes is a small temple of Romanesque origin located at the foot of the mountain of Sant Llorenç del Munt. It is a chapel of  a plain structure, with a single rectangular nave, covered by a barrel vault and a semi-circular apse with semi-dome. The building attached to the north wall of the church is the house of the hermits who formerly used to be involved in the worship and the maintenance of the building.

The image of the Mare de Déu de les Arenes is popularly known as the Virgin Mary of the little bucket. The Romanesque carving was carrying a bucket of silver hanging from the arm since it was felt that the  Mare de Déu de les Arenes had interceded in times of drought. The current image is a reproduction of the Romanesque carving that disappeared in 1936.
