The municipality of Ullastrell had a dispersed settlement, distributed among several masias, until the 19th century. The town was born at the beginning of the 19th century, based on three cores: Can Gras, Serra and Sardà. The parish church was built in the latter core in 1902, which replaced an old Romanesque temple, from which there has been retained no vestige.
The parish church is dedicated to Santa Maria and has a unique bell tower, from 1908, work of the modernist architect Lluís Muncunill i Parellada. This bell tower was built in brick and it was crowned by a cover of trencadís, made of white glazed ceramic.
