The origins of the current parish church of Sant Esteve date back to the late 18th century, when the inhabitants of Castellar del Vallès requested that the parish headquarters of the municipality (until then located in Castellar Vell, on the right bank of the river Ripoll) was transferred to the left bank of the river, since the town centre was there.
The origin of the building dates back to the 18th century, but the current building was built between the years 1885 and 1892 by the architect Joan Martorell Montells. It had as promoter Emilia Calres-Tolrà, owner of the company Tolrà and later converted into Marquise of Sant Esteve of Castellar. This building is one of the most important examples of Catalan Neogothic. It is known as the cathedral of the Vallès by its extraordinary dimensions.
