We offer two days of hiking through the scenarios of the Vallès region of the war of the Spanish Succession (1702-1714). The two proposed stages are set in the Route 1714, a proposal promoted by the Federation of Catalan excursionist Institutions, with the support of the Government of Catalonia to commemorate the Triennial of the outcome of the War of Succession in Catalonia. This includes the whole of Catalonia, and is organized into three major types of spaces: the stage, the villages burned and the 1714 spaces.
The route uses existing trails: in the Vallès section passes through the GR-6 (red and white marks) and PR-C 31 (white and yellow marks).
Our proposal begins at Born Centre Cultural (Barcelona), it follows the natural surroundings of Sant Cugat del Vallès and it arrives to Terrassa, one of the 22 villages burned in 1713. The tour has 33, 2 km, and is divided into two days.
DAY 1
MORNING
We are in the Born Centre Cultural (Barcelona), the site that houses the remains of neighborhoods that were destroyed to build the military stronghold of the Ciutadella. Our journey continues towards the Collserola Natural Park by the first section of the GR-6 (red and white) to cross the city: Passeig de Gràcia, Arc de Triomf, Plaça Tetuan, Passeig de Sant Joan in the direction of the Hill of El Carmel, the exit door of the city.
At this point leave the urban section to enter in a forest with soft relief and well signalled trails, the Natural Park of Collserola.
Gong through the Sierra de Collserola arrive in Sant Cugat del Vallès, where you will go to the region of the Vallès Occidental. In this section we will move on to landscape features of great beauty as the Casa Can Borrell (an example of the peasant tradition of the area) and the Pi d’en Xandri (monumental tree of a characteristic shape). Once you have done 18 km from the starting point you will arrive to Sant Cugat del Vallès, our site of stop.
Where to eat? Take into account the distance of this stage (approx. 18 km), plan a picnic for the route.
AFTERNOON
Discover the city of Sant Cugat del Vallès, a city full of cultural and leisure attractions such as: Monastery of Sant Cugat with its Romanesque cloister, the Museum of the monastery, the Modernist Winery, the House Museum Gerrer Must (which hosts the legacy of the ceramics factory Arpí and the artists Cabanas-Alibau, and a collection of objects of Marilyn Monroe), Mercantic (a vintage market with a great commercial and leisure offer), or a walk through the city to enjoy its commercial offer.
Where to sleep? Stay in the city, look to the web Hotels of Sant Cugat and choose the most suitable to your needs.
Where to have diner? You can choose among the varied gastronomic offer of the city. As unique proposals you will find the Old Market (a gourmet market of the 21st century in a historic building) and Mercantic (healthy food, cuisine).
DAY 2
MORNING
Today you will have a flatter journey (14 km) that will take you from Sant Cugat del Vallès to Terrassa. To get there follow the Camí del Monjos path marked with the yellow and white marks of the PR-C 31. This is a historic trail that connects the monastery of Sant Cugat to that of Sant Llorenç del Munt.
Our day leaves from the monastery of Sant Cugat going towards Sant Quirze del Vallès, it passes through different buildings of historical and artistic interest: the vaults of the Carrer Major and the square of Pere Sant, the chapel of Sant Domènec, the masies of Can Bellet, Can Canyameres, Can Delaire and Can Graells, up to the Coll de la Creueta. Shortly before you reach the hill, we recommend a visit to the Romanesque chapel of Sant Feliuet de Vilamilans, duly marked with the sign posts of the route.
From the hill we will descend towards the district of Les Fonts, we will cross the highway by a specific pass and we will arrive to Terrassa.
Once you arrive to “Ègara” (Roman name of Terrassa), relax and have a dinner in one of the restaurants of the city. If you want to taste local products make a visit to one of the restaurants of Cuina Vallès or Terrassa gastronòmica) .
Once you have enjoyed a good dinner, we suggest you a visit to the Convent of San Francisco, the most emblematic of the siege. On 4 September 1713 Terrassa became one of the 22 villages burned during the war of the Spanish succession. The Convent was the site where the villagers sheltered to escape from fire. However, the Church was plundered and the town was burned. We recommend its visit (see Opening times)
